What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum. An at least half of the population develops hemorrhoids by the age of 50. In some geographic areas as much as 80% of the population is  developing hemorrhoids at a certain point in their lives.

Alternate names of hemorrhoids are: Varicose Veins of the Rectum, Lump in the Rectum, Piles, Rectal Lump.

The correct spelling is hemorrhoids or haemorrhoids - although many are misspelling it as: haemorrhoid, hemeroids, hemerroids, hemmeroids, hemmerroids, hemmoroids, hemrroids, hemoroids, hemorrhoides, hemorroids, hemroids.

Hemorrhoids develop either inside the anus - internal hemorrhoids, or under the skin around the anus - external hemorrhoids and are seen as cushions of tissue surrounding the anal opening.

Hemorrhoids are caused because of too much pressure put on the veins in the rectal area. This pressure is generally caused by other conditions or diseases. The main cause of hemorrhoids is constipation, while some others are pregnancy and genetic predisposition to weak veins. Vitamin B6 deficiency, acid/alkaline imbalance, fatigue liver, sitting or standing in the same position for a long period of time may also contribute to development of hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid can become inflamed, it can itch, slight bleeding can occur and cause pain. Unless treated properly a hemorrhoidal condition only tends to get worse over the years, therefore early treatment is advised.
